Curriculum and Development

North Star Academy has developed over 100 interim assessments directly aligned with New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and North Star curricula. These assessments form the backbone of the data-driven instructional model that has greatly enhanced student achievement at WPHS.

Longer School Day and Year

To ensure that every student masters each and every standard, we provide students with a longer school day and longer year. We also provide homework help and after-school tutoring, Saturday School for students who need extra support, and double periods of English and Math daily.

Eliminating the Achievement Gap

North Star Academy students have succeeded in eliminating the achievement gap, routinely outperforming their more affluent, suburban district peers on New Jersey state assessments. Based on recent test results, North Star's high school is the highest-performing non-selective urban high school in New Jersey.

Emphasis on College

In 2013, North Star Academy sent off its tenth graduating class. Every senior was accepted to at least one four-year college. Each student averaged six acceptances each, and 90 percent of graduates are attending a four-year university, with another 10 percent attending a two-year school.

Athletics and Enrichment

Our students participate in a wide variety of enrichment activities, from the award-winning Debate and STEP teams to scholastic basketball and coding, all of which serve to help students become well-rounded individuals and better prepare them for college life.

Without great teachers, nothing else matters. We believe in giving our teachers the time and professional tools to do their jobs effectively.
